FAQ

Health & Safety

Are El Greco products Greenguard Gold certified?

Yes! Our product coatings are UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certified® for low chemical emissions and promote our values of health and safety. It is very important to us as a family business that your family is safe from harmful toxins.

My child is teething, is it harmful for them to chew on the crib?

We are careful to choose safety over performance in our finishing product selection. Our finishes are UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certified® for low chemical emissions. They do not contain lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, or phthalates, and are certified non-toxic. Your child’s body will not metabolize the coating, and it will pass through the system undigested.

What is the weight limit for your products?

Per the federal requirement, cribs and toddler rails are tested to a limit of 50 lbs., beds are tested to 200 lbs. Our cribs and beds are tested by an independent third-party testing lab, and are certified to be in compliance with Regulations of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the voluntary standards of the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM). We adhere to the requirements of (CPSIA) Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.

Are El Greco finishes free of VOC’s?

Once our product is fully cured, the coating is inert and the solvents containing VOC’s have completely dissipated.

Are my products still “off-gassing” in my home?

More than 95% of “off-gassing” occurs during the “flash-off” period (the time between being sprayed and becoming dry to the touch). The flash-off period takes place in our well-ventilated factory. After that, off-gassing is minuscule. Once the product has completely cured (about 30 days out of packaging), it is done off-gassing. To assure and speed up this process, place the product in a warm area with good air circulation.

My product is giving off an odor, what can I do?

Although it is very uncommon to smell an odor from our products, the easiest way to remove an odor is to expose the product to warm, circulating air. To aid this process, you can also introduce an odor remover (similar to the ones used in household kitchens and bathrooms) into the room where the product is located.

Are El Greco products JPMA certified?

We do not participate in the JPMA marketing program. However, we completely comply with the same federal laws and voluntary standards that JPMA adopts for their testing protocol.

Where can I find the tracking label?

The Moda and Greta Crib tracking numbers can be found on the wooden mattress support platform. Tracking label for all other cribs can be found on the lower portion of the headboard, on the inside of the bottom horizontal stretcher.

Are El Greco products completely made in the USA?

Our products are truly made in the USA. We start with local lumber, and do every step of the manufacturing process here in our factory in Jamestown, NY. From the rough lumber to the finished product, we make every wooden part ourselves -- even our cardboard comes from another factory in Jamestown. Our metal mattress support platforms are made in Tennessee. We use a domestic lab for independent product testing.

What materials are used to make El Greco furniture?

We take pride in the fact that our products are made from locally-sourced wood harvested using sustainable forestry practices. Our Nest crib is made entirely of maple, cherry, or walnut hardwood. Our Moda and Flynn Collections are made with a combination of hardwood and high-quality MDF (medium density fiberboard). The MDF we use is compliant with the Eco-Certified Composite Sustainable Standard. We make sure that we use an NAF (no-added formaldehyde) MDF compliant with CARB Phase 2, maintaining our standard of low emissions.

What finishes/paints are used?

On the Flynn and Kavala Collections, we use Sayerlack Hydroplus Waterborne Acrylic Polyurethane, which is UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certified® for low chemical emissions.

On Nest Cribs and the whole Moda collection, we use Sher-wood F3 Hi-Bild PreCat Lacquer by Sherwin Williams and are UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certified® for low chemical emissions.

We require our finishes to be formaldehyde-free at all stages of use: application, curing, and post-curing. They do not contain lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, or phthalates, and are certified non-toxic.

Can I buy custom-made furniture from El Greco?

No. Here at El Greco, safety is very important to us. Our designs are rigorously tested to meet not only government & industry standards, but our own. In order for our compliance to be valid, we cannot alter our product in any way. Although we do not do customize orders, we would be happy to answer any specific safety questions you may have.
